I don't know about you, but I'm curretly looking for a job. Our discussion today takes us on a ride of a job research, i.e. we'll belooking at the differences between Linked In profile and a simple Resume. Everybody thinks that Linked in is a simple Online CV. Well, if you are being part of those everyone, you can't be more wrong. I'll explain you why.
We shall be discussion the differences between the two of them in order to understand the usefulness of each one.
First of all, each one has a different aim. A resume is a personalized apprilication for a job whether your Linked In profile is a general overview of all of your competencies and skills. Online profile does include all of your previous experiences and a resume is a tailored for an application. Better keep your social media profile updated and then make multiple resumes to match each of your applications.
Second of all, a resume is a simple dialogue between you and a recruiter and a Linked In profile offers a possibility of multiple recruiters / headhunters and your competition to have an access to your profile. As this is a public site people can review you regarding your skills and competencies give you a note or writing you a comment. As your profile is public, be aware to not expose any private data such as age, religion, address. But its public appereance can be one of the big positive sides of this social media profile offering the possibility to any recruiter to contact you.
Then, don't count on originality on Linked In. Your profile stays basic on this social media and cannot make much difference. If you wish to put a spin on your CV and make it to stand out form the comeptetion, make it on your own, be creative or take inspiration from different templates and CVs. Be sure to have a professional photo on that is not a "facebook-like".
In France we have this unofficial understanding between candidates and recruiters that a CV must not exceed one page. Basically, managers do not spend more than ten seconds on your resume therefore better make it count. As Linked In does not have any lenght limit and this is one of the oinconvenience of the social media.
Lastly, pay attention to the keywords you use on your Linked In profile because its research techniques are not very well developped so use choose carefuly so that you have more visibility.
Hope this was helpful enough for you and now you understand the importance of each one of them.
Wishing you all the best with your research and do not forget " The sky is the limit" as long as you are passionate for it you can achieve great things.
Sincerely yours,
Happy to help you
